The University of New England scored a tying goal with 30 seconds left in regulation, then allowed a goal with 12 seconds remaining as St. Norbert pulled out a 5-4 win Saturday night in the first round of the NCAA Division III men’s hockey tournament in De Pere, Wisconsin.
Trailing 4-3, UNE pulled goalie Harrison Chesney for an extra skater and tied the game on a goal by Nathan Chickering.
But Jack Christen quickly answered for St. Norbert (22-6-2), sending the No. 2 team in the USCHO.com poll to the quarterfinals against No. 1 Hobart, the three-time defending NCAA champion.
Ryan Hadland, Nick Marino and Dominic Murphy scored for seventh-ranked UNE (21-7) in a wild first period that ended with the Nor’easters ahead 3-2. St. Norbert tied it with a power-play goal in the second period and took the lead on a goal by Braydon Beam with 4:14 left in the third.
