Trey Alexander capped a 42-point night by making the winning basket with nine seconds remaining, lifting the Birmingham Squadron to a 144-143 win over the Maine Celtics in an NBA G League game Monday night in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Celtics lost despite a career-high 43 points from Keon Johnson, who hit two free throws with 18 seconds left to give Maine a 143-142 lead.
Seven players scored in double figures for the Celtics, including Hason Ward with 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting, to go with nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Jalen Bridges had 19 points, Hank Morgan scored 18, and Hayden Gray posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 assists.
Maine shot 58% (48 of 83), but Birmingham made 59% of its shots overall (52 of 88) and was 61% from 3-point range (17 of 28).
The Celtics (15-17) dropped a half game behind the Windy City Bulls for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with four games remaining.
