I cannot adequately express my sorrow and embarrassment about what the president has done to our relationship with Canada, a relationship developed through trade, tourism and standing together.

During World War I, Canada was involved from the beginning — declaring war in support of England. Canada sent roughly 424,000 soldiers overseas and many gave, in Abraham Lincoln’s words, “their last full measure of devotion” to stopping a militaristic Germany.

In World War II, Canada was involved by 1939. Canadian troops were held in POW camps after the fall of Hong Kong. Canadian troops were part of the ill-fated Dieppe Raid. They landed on Juno Beach on D-Day. Canada supported the war effort without asking for any lend/lease aid from America.

Canadians answered the call when war started in Korea. Canadians became widely known in Korea for their humanitarian aid.

During Vietnam, approximately 30,000 Canadians volunteered and served in the U.S. military.  All told, 100,000 Americans decided to make Canada home during that time, and Canada accommodated them.

In 1979, America’s embassy was seized in Iran. After providing refuge for six Americans, our citizens came home with Canadian help. I was in college at the time and I was so happy and proud of Canada, and our relationship, that my throat still tightens.

Trump and his supporters have now caused Canada to chart its own course. I harbor no ill will and I wish the best for Canada. I am sad and embarrassed that it has come to this.
