Of the unconstitutional, immoral, economic and social consequences of ICE’s invasion of our cities, one result is frequently not recognized: the training and arming of white nationalists and neo-Nazis in modern urban warfare.
ICE’s recruitment drive used music and language aimed directly at extremist groups such as the Proud Boys, whose “Unite the Right” paraders rioted in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017. These racist, violent, antisemitic ads appeared regularly on YouTube and Google. A recruitment ad that appeared on the official Department of Homeland Security Instagram account featured the neo-Nazi song “We’ll Have our Home Again” by the Pine Tree Riots.
While ICE’s activities will probably abate due to political pressure on account of the upcoming congressional elections, the threat to our democracy by right-wing terrorist groups should be of increasing concern.
