Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr recently warned broadcasters that their outlets’ government-issued licenses for use of the airwaves could be revoked if they publicly report information his agency deems as false. The president subsequently endorsed his appointee’s statement. I suppose these dark statements from Mr. Carr and Mr. Trump represent “just another day” in Washington, D.C. How unfortunate for the rest of us.

Consider the following: Many generations, comprising millions of decent human beings, have lived as Russians under autocratic governance for centuries. They continue to do so today. These good people experience life’s full range of joys and sorrows. Just like us. They also understand what is in place for government. And that their opinions matter for naught.

The Russians further understand that openly stating one’s opinion can be hazardous, especially when that opinion is contrary to government policy or whatever rhetoric the masses are buying into. Sad but true.

We, of the United States, are taught from grade school that American citizens do not live that way. And we have not lived that way. But we are about to start living that way. Just like the Russians. Think about it.
