Amazon plans to build a 159,000-square-foot distribution center on a currently undeveloped field on Trafton and Junction roads in Waterville and Sidney, developers announced.
The shopping and shipping giant plans to file applications for the site in the coming month, a letter from developers to neighbors stated.
Camber Development and engineering firm VHB plan to hold an open-to-the-public informational meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Waterville City Hall Annex, 46 Front St. in Waterville, to answer questions about the project and its anticipated environmental impacts.
The proposed 48-acre site sits within a quarter-mile of Interstate 95, and it borders Trafton Road on the north, Junction Road on the west and a wooded area to the south and east. The site itself consists of a gravel lot and a large mowed agricultural field, which is split between the city of Waterville and the town of Sidney.
The proposed distribution center could be Amazon’s third facility in Maine. The company opened a smaller delivery building in Caribou last year, and it filed plans to operate 149,000-square-foot distribution center in Gorham earlier this month.
The Gorham proposal, of similar size to the one to be proposed in Waterville and Sidney, attracted protests from community members over traffic, environmental impact and noise. Amazon did not immediately respond to questions about the project.
The current owner of the property, according to Waterville tax records, is Trafton Properties, LLC, a Rhode Island-based company, with a real estate lawyer listed as registered agent.
No site plans have been filed yet. The project would need to clear both municipal and Maine Department of Environmental Protection permitting for approval.
