Maine has spent about $20,000 a year per student on K-12 education in recent years.

In fiscal year 2024-25, Maine school districts reported spending an average of $19,803.88 per student, according to a state Department of Education report. That report listed 168,611 students statewide, with total spending of about $3.34 billion.

National Center for Education Statistics data compiled by USAFacts shows Maine spent $20,600 per K-12 student as of the 2021-22 school year. About 48.6% came from local sources such as property taxes, while 41.3% came from state programs and the federal government provided the other 10.1%.

Maine’s per-student spending that year was roughly $2,200 more than the national average of $18,500. Still, Maine had the lowest per-student spending in New England. Per-student spending was $22,100 in New Hampshire, $22,200 in Rhode Island, $23,900 in Massachusetts, $24,600 in Vermont and $26,000 in Connecticut.
