Former South Portland boys basketball star JP Estrella is joining the national champions.

Estrella shared on his Instagram page a post from ESPN reporter Pete Thamel announcing the forward from Scarborough has committed to Michigan. Estrella confirmed the news in a phone call with the Kennebec Journal.

“Tennessee big-man J.P. Estrella has committed to Michigan, he tells ESPN, delivering one of the most coveted big-men in the portal,” Thamel wrote in the post. “He continues the lineage of high-end transfer big men at Michigan as they played an outsized line-up to win the national title.”

Estrella, a 6-foot-11, 240-pound forward, played three seasons with the University of Tennessee. He entered the transfer portal on Monday.

He appeared in 33 games and started 13 this year for Tennessee, averaging 10.0 points and 5.4 rebounds. The Volunteers reached their third consecutive NCAA regional final, falling to Michigan in the Elite Eight to finish with a 25-12 record.

He played in 25 games as a freshman and missed all but three games in 2024-25 because of a foot injury.

A Scarborough native, Estrella played two seasons at South Portland from 2020-22. He then transferred to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire for his senior year. He helped the Red Riots win the 2022 Class AA boys basketball title, and was a Varsity Maine All-State selection as a junior when he averaged 20.2 points and 11.8 rebounds.

Michigan capped a 37-3 season by beating UConn, 69-63, in the national championship game on Monday. The Wolverines played a starting lineup of all transfers in the final. Four members of the Michigan roster  — Yaxel Lendeborg, Roddy Gayle Jr., Nimari Burnett and Will Tschetter — are out of eligibility. Others could declare for the NBA draft.
