Colby College beat the Massachusetts Institute of Technology twice on Saturday to win its regional in the NCAA Division III softball tournament on Saturday in Bangor.
The Mules (30-12) won 9-2 to force an if-necessary game, then prevailed 8-5 to advance to a best-of-three super regional against Rowan or East Texas Baptist.
Colby lost to MIT 7-2 in its first game of the tournament. The Mules battled out of the losers bracket by beating Husson and Endicott on Friday.
In the first game Saturday, Avery Lyman was 3 for 3 with a double and three RBI. No. 2 hitter Emma Burnham had two hits, including a double, and scored four times.
Sophia Meade pitched 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits while striking out four and walking one.
In the second game, Colby pulled away with four runs in the fifth inning, including a two-run triple by Carissa Cassidy. Burnham had a double, scored a run and drove in a run. Kathryne Clay added two hits and two RBI.
BASEBALL
WHITWORTH 15, HUSSON 10: Husson (24-18) erased an early 6-0 deficit but couldn’t complete the comeback and was eliminated by Whitworth (29-15) in an NCAA regional elimination game in Montclair, New Jersey.
Keegan Cyr capped a six-run fourth inning with a three-run double that tied the game at 6-6. The rally included RBI singles by Cam Rendell, Liam Kelley and Ryan Bousquet.
Whitworth, though, regained the lead with four runs in the fifth, then added another in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Husson’s Matt Holmes hit a solo home run in the ninth, and Henry Lausier had an RBI single.
