MADISON — The town is moving forward with its plan to demolish the old junior high school building on Main Street.

On Monday, selectmen awarded the demolition work to low bidder Vaughn D. Thibodeau II, a Bangor contractor.

The demolition cost is $70,700, Berry said, and includes $3,700 to save a plaque from the building that bears the school’s name.

The 12 bids ranged up to $274,000.

“Right now we are trying to determine a time, and we’re aiming for February. We’d like to do the demolition over the February school break, when fewer people are in town and it would be less of a disturbance,” Town Manager Dana Berry said.

The building, which dates to the late 1800s, has been vacant for about 10 years.

Berry said the town plans to have a new playground, municipal parking lot and open space for a farmer’s market put in.

In September, the town signed a contract with consulting firm Dirigo Engineering to plan the engineering and design of a new space.

Project manager Jim Lord said they are scheduling the demolition and that the plan is for the project to be completed by the end of the summer.
