The Winthrop Maine Historical Society will host educator and writer Donald Beattie from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Winthrop Town Office, 167 Main St., Winthrop.
Beattie’s talk, “Fifty Years of Writing Local History,” will focus on East Winthrop, Winthrop Center, and the life of the Margaret Tibbetts, according to a news release from Shane M. Billings, adult services librarian at Bailey Public Library.
Beattie’s teaching career spanned more than 50 years. Among the highlights he served as an associate professor from 1962 to 1968 at Bentley College (now Bentley University) in Waltham, Massachusetts, was Dean of the College from 1968 to 1977 at North Shore Community College in Beverly, Massachusetts, and president of the University of Maine at Augusta from 1977 to 1980. He has also taught classes at UMA’s Senior College.
In recent years, Beattie has written multiple books, including an ambitious history of Togus in four volumes.
The program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
