AUGUSTA — Maine Housing Authority board members are discussing the future direction of the housing agency after a federal audit found it failed to provide adequate oversight for its Section 8 program.

Chairman Peter Anastos and fellow board members Bruce Poliquin and Lincoln Merrill are holding a news conference in Augusta on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the audit and changes at MaineHousing.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins requested that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s inspector general conduct an audit after a weekly newspaper exposed substandard living conditions at Section 8 housing units.

The audit found that 53 of 61 housing units that were inspected did not meet federal standards, and concluded that MaineHousing didn’t have adequate oversight of third parties that were contracted to manage the properties.
