BERWICK — A 63-year-old Berwick woman, who had to be rescued from her burning home by firefighters last Friday, died Sunday night at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the State Fire Marshal’s Office, said Rebecca Galleshaw passed away in Boston after being treated for severe smoke inhalation.
Firefighters responded to her First Street home around 8:30 a.m. Friday after neighbors reported smoke pouring out of the house. They found Galleshaw, who lived alone, unconscious in her bed. Firefighters performed CPR and got a pulse before transporting Galleshaw to a hospital in New Hamspshire.
Investigators have determined that the fire was caused by faulty electrical wires in the basement of Galleshaw’s home. The fire was confined to the basement but the rest of the home sustained heavy smoke damage.
McCausland said Galleshaw is the first fire death reported in Maine this year.
