The proposed $33 million budget for RSU 18, defeated by voters on June 12, would have increased property taxes in four of the district’s five towns: Belgrade, China, Oakland and Sidney.

The top two areas of increase in the budget are salaries and benefits.

Taxpayers requested the RSU 18 board of directors to live within its prior-year budget of $32 million to prevent municipalities from incurring property tax increases.

On July 18, the board of directors failed its assignment, when it produced an amended budget totaling $32.6 million.

When RSU 18 students do not complete an assignment or do not meet the goals of an assignment, they get an incomplete or unsatisfactory grade on their progress reports.

The board of directors must apply the same rating scheme to its unfinished task.

I urge residents of RSU 18 towns to reject the budget as proposed. The vote will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Messalonskee High School.
