The Sept. 1 letter “Coal, gas and oil lobbies are not looking out for us,” falsely claims that there is no such thing as clean coal. The facts show that coal is being used more cleanly now than ever before because of investments in clean coal technology.

The coal industry has invested more than $100 billion to improve coal’s environmental performance, and the results have been incredible.

Data from the EIA and the EPA show that emissions of major pollutants from coal-fired plants, including sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, have been reduced by 90 percent per unit of electricity generated over the past 30 years.

And by 2015, more than 90 percent of coal-fueled electric generating capacity will install clean-coal technologies that will further reduce emissions of major pollutants.

Clean coal is an American success story, providing businesses and families with electricity that is affordable, reliable and increasingly clean. America should not have to choose between affordable electricity and a cleaner environment; and with continued deployment and development of clean coal, we won’t have to.
