AUGUSTA — UMA will hold its annual Convocation from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friday on the campus green.

Convocation will open with a processional through a dramatic “tarpitecture” display constructed by UMA Architecture faculty and students.

Dressed in formal academic regalia, faculty will be joined in the processional by student Rising Scholars. Nominated by faculty and staff for their academic achievement and promise, Rising Scholars will also be recognized by President Handley during the program.

The program will revolve around UMA’s academic theme this year of food. The theme is selected each year by UMA’s faculty Colloquium Committee.

The keynote speaker will be Denis Thoet, a local organic farmer and writer. Thoet runs Longmeadow Farm, a community-supported agricultural endeavor that provides food to about 100 local families.

Convocation will also feature presentations on the academic theme by UMA student April Doughty, and two members of the UMA faculty: Daylin Butler, a professor of business and public administration, and Susan Baker, an associate professor of science.

During Convocation, Baker will receive UMA’s annual Distinguished Educator Award, while Peter Milligan, an associate professor of biology, will receive UMA’s Distinguished Scholar Award.
