AUGUSTA — A man charged with murder in the stabbing death last year of his roommate was expected back in Maine Thursday night and in Kennebec County jail today, authorities said.

Michael Thomas Young, 40, of Augusta, was arrested April 5 in Key West, Fla., on a warrant from Maine. He is accused of murdering David Cox, 46, on June 11 in the Green Street apartment they shared.

Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police, said Thursday that Maine State Police Detective Christopher Tupper and Augusta Police Detective Jason Cote took a plane to Florida to bring Young back to Maine.

McCausland said Young waived extradition late last week in a Florida court.

Young had been indicted March 22 by a grand jury in Kennebec County on a single charge of murder, and authorities acted on a tip that he might be in Key West.

Young is expected to arraigned on the murder charge either today or early next week in Kennebec County Superior Court, where the case is specially assigned to Justice Michaela Murphy.

Authorities said Cox was stabbed in the chest, but otherwise have provided few details about the case. Police were called to the apartment that day by Young.

Neighbors reported frequently hearing arguments between Cox and Young, who had lived in the apartment for about two years. Neighbors said they believe the two men were in a same-sex relationship.
