OAKLAND — Eight different players scored a goal Wednesday morning, helping Brunswick to a 13-3 win over Messalonskee in an Eastern Maine Class A boys lacrosse game.
“We had a terrible season last year, and most of us have been playing since our last game,” said Brunswick senior Chris Snyder, who scored twice. “We have a lot of pride in what we do, we want the stats going one way.”
Snyder opened the scoring for the Dragons (2-0) at 10:49 of the first quarter, ripping a shot from 15 yards. The Dragons added a pair of goals late in the quarter, by Cam Glover (who finished with 3) and Alex Croatti (2) to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
“Brunswick is probably the best team in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference,” Messalonskee coach Tom Sheridan said. “We are going to see them again, we just need to get our kids to start playing at the varsity level.”
Messalonskee (0-2) played without all-time leading scorer Nate DelGiudice, who was ejected from the Eagles season opener at Mt. Ararat. According to Maine Principal Association rules, any player ejected must sit out the next game following the ejection.
“Obviously we missed Nate, but we need to get used to playing in different offensive sets and with different players,” Sheridan said.
The two teams played even in the second quarter, scoring two goals each. Brunswick took control in the second half, scoring six consecutive goals to take an 11-2 lead with 9:38 left in the game.
Luke Vigue and Aiden Calkins found the back of the net for the Eagles in the second quarter. Vigue’s goal came at 8:54, while Calkins scored from close range after a nice pass from Vigue at 1:09.
Brunswick opened the season with a shutout over Oxford Hills and was ready to force the action against Messalonskee. Brunswick collected 39 ground balls (many in the defensive end) to 23 for Messalonskee.
“We knew what we needed to do defensively,” senior defender Blake Bodwell, who captured six ground balls for the Dragons, said. “Playing hard and going to the ball were important for us.”
Brunswick’s Sam Fortin won 14 of 17 faceoffs, and the Dragons had a 52-19 advantage in shots. Messalonskee goalkeeper Jacob Smith had 22 saves with Brunswick’s James Wilgus stopped eight shots.
