Several years ago, the city of Hallowell wisely determined that the land where the elementary school was once located would remain open. Today parents, their kids and pets wander down Middle Street and enjoy slides, swings, games and runs throughout the area. I know; I live where I see the colorful collection each day.

A few days ago, I noticed shrubs, fallen trees and leaves along the outer edges of the walk. It looked quite unsightly, yet the walk was delightful.

This morning, with a bright sunny sky overhead, I went for a walk. Not far into it, I realized that the surrounding area was pristine.

After my walk around the loop, I headed for the city office. The public works crew cleaned the entire area. I thanked the city manager, but came home thinking the entire city should realize the dedication of our maintenance personnel.

I want to thank every member of the Hallowell Public Works crew for their dedicated care of the beauty and accessibility of our 250- year-old amazing city.
