WINTHROP — The town’s historical society will host Peter Nielsen from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 8, via Zoom.
Nielsen, former Winthrop town manager, will focus on the topic “Why is Local History Important to ME?”

He has lived with Mary Richards on the former Winthrop Town Farm for 42 of their 45 married years, and living there sparked a personal interest in local history that he will attempt to explain. Nielsen aims to encourage listeners to explore their own surroundings, and create historical contents that can enrich their lives.
He proposes to share some of what he learned from Richards’ grandfather, who lived on the farm for more than 50 years after buying it in the early 1940s.
Nielsen will display a few artifacts and comment on themes that seem to persist over the years. A business meeting will follow.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
