LIVERMORE — High school seniors have the chance to receive a $1,000 scholarship, named in honor of the Washburn-Norlands Living History Center (Norlands) founder, Ethel “Billie” Gammon. In 2010, on the first anniversary of Billie’s passing, the Norlands board of trustees established the scholarship to honor her enthusiasm for sharing American history by providing support in her name for learning through fun.

One $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a Maine high school senior who has been inspired by his or her experiences at Norlands and plans to pursue a field that can be related to its mission, which includes history, American studies, education, museum studies and sustainable agriculture for example.

The application deadline is Saturday, June 30.

Applicants must complete an application and submit a 300- to 500-word essay about how Norlands relates to and/or has affected their interests and their life plans. Applications are available at norlands.org.

A selection committee will review applications and choose a recipient based on the strength of the essay and how closely the Norlands mission relates to or has affected the applicant’s interests and college plans. The recipient will be notified by Aug. 1.
