NEWPORT — Sara Packard pitched a three-hitter and struck out 12 as No. 6 Nokomis held off 11th-ranked Mt. Desert Island, 5-3, in an Eastern B softball preliminary round game Wednesday afternoon.
Nokomis (12-5) had only one hit — a single by Lacey Kent-Webber in the third inning — but drew nine walks and benefited from five MDI errors. The Warriors scored their first two runs in the second inning, with both runners coming home on passed balls.
Trailing 5-1, MDI got two runs in the top of the seventh as the rain fell and the game was eventually delayed for about 15 minutes. The Trojans got the tying rn to the plate before Packard struck out the last batter to end the game.
The Warriors move on to play No. 3 Medomak Valley in a quarterfinal at 3 p.m., today.

Richmond 7, Forest Hills 4: Gage Myrick drove in three runs and Kade Strout pitched a complete game to lead the No. 5 Bobcats to the quarterfinal win in Jackman.
The win was the fifth in a row for the No. 5 Bobcats (6-10) who advance to Friday’s semifinal against top-seed Buckfield. No. 4 Forest Hills finishes at 9-8.
Myrick doubled home a pair of runs in Richmond’s five-run second inning and added a pair of singled. Randy Moody also drove in arun with a sacrifice fly. Ethan Levesque singled, tripled and hit a solo homer to lead the Tiogers while teammate Ryan Petrin singled and hit asolo home run.
Strout (3-2) allowed seven hits, struck out two and didn’t issue a walk.
