AUGUSTA — Carly Raymond scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift Mt. Ararat to an 11-10 upset win over Cony in an Eastern Maine Class A girls lacrosse quarterfinal game Wednesday afternoon.

No. 5 Mt. Ararat (5-4) advances to Saturday’s semifinal round while No. 4 Cony (9-4) was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the third straight year.

“I just don’t know, this is the third year we’ve lost in the first round,” Cony coach Gretchen Livingston said. “We needed intensity and just didn’t find it.”

Cony beat Mt. Ararat twice during the regular season but couldn’t find the right combination to put the Eagles away for the third time.

“Our team work was very good today,” Mt. Ararat coach Sam Chard said. “Our younger kids stepped up and scored goals helping us play a strong game.”

Cony’s Mia Diplock scored her fourth goal of the second half with 1:26 left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Raymond scored the game-winner at 2:12 of the first three-minute overtime session, with an assists from Rowley Jones. Mt. Ararat won all three draw possessions in the overtimes.

Mt. Ararat went to work early double- and triple-teaming Cony’s high-scoring duo of Diplock and Chelsea Begin. The tactic worked well in the first half. The Eagles held Begin to one goal.

Cony’s Heather Leet and Bayleigh Logan took advantage of the Eagles’ defense, scoring two goals each in the first half. Leet finished with three goals.

“We knew Mia and Chelsea were the strength of their team,” Chard said. “We worked really hard shutting down the top of their offense.”

Cony took the largest lead of the game (5-3) late in the first half when Logan scored off a pass from Diplock with 21 seconds remaining. The Eagles recovered quickly when Hannah Hauser scored 10 seconds later.

In an up and down, fast paced second half, Hauser led the Eagles with five goals.

Katrina Duncan was impressive in goal for Cony facing 29 Mt. Ararat shots. The Eagles used a quick transistion game to generate one-on-one situations against Duncan. The Rams senior keeper game up big on a number of occasions and finished with 14 saves.

Mt. Ararat keeper Bailey Sullivan stopped eight of Cony’s 23 shots.
