Jennie M. Breed

GARDINER – May 11, 2021, Jennie M. Breed, 95, of Plaisted Street in Gardiner passed away at her home on May 11, 2021 after a lengthy period of declining health.Jennie was born in Gardiner on Sept, 15, 1925, the daughter of George A. Atkins and Esther (Pushard) Atkins. She attended Gardiner area schools and graduated from Gardiner High School in 1942. Upon graduation she began employment with the State of Maine where she worked for the Department of Health and Welfare, the Bureau of Taxation and finally with the Secretary of State-Division of Motor Vehicles. At the time of her retirement in 1988 she was the Assistant Secretary of State for Driver License Exams.Jennie married Harlan J. Breed on Nov. 7, 1947 in Gardiner. Harlan passed away on Oct. 25, 1982. Jennie was an active member of Highland Avenue United Methodist Church in Gardiner where she had many cherished friends. She served on several committees at the church and was a member of the United Methodist Women, The Northern Avenue Makaria Circle. She was also a member of the Marion Chapter #63 of the Order of the Eastern Star.In addition to her husband, Harlan, Jennie was predeceased by her parents; her brothers George L. Atkins and Ernest D. Atkins, her sister Alberta G. Jones; stepson David W. Breed, and daughter-in-law Meredyth D. Breed. Surviving are two sons, Michael H. Breed (Lois) of Henderson, Nev. and Darrell J. Breed of Sterling, Va., daughter Wendy L. Vigue of Hallowell, daughter-in-law Edith Breed of Gardiner; and numerous grandchildren, great- grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren. She was especially close to her niece Gail Grasse and her husband Norman or Windsor.The family is very grateful for the support and nursing help from niece Gail Grasse and granddaughter Cathi Seraph who provided incredible TLC during the final months of Jennie’s life. A celebration of Jennie’s life will be scheduled at the church later this summer.Arrangements are entrusted with Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine.
