WEST POINT, N.Y. — Cadet Emma Kay Begin, daughter of John and Michelle Begin of Chelsea, graduated May 22 from the U.S. Military Academy.
Begin graduated in 2016 from Hall-Dale High School in Farmingdale and was a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School in 2017. While at West Point she concentrated her studies in environmental engineering, served as secretary of her class, and was a four-year member of the West Point Women’s Boxing Team.
Begin was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the Army Aviation branch and will report to Fort Rucker in Alabama in late July for her officer basic course and aviation training.
The mission of the U.S. Military Academy is to educate, train and inspire the Corps of Cadets so each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of duty, honor and country, and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the nation as an officer in the U.S. Army.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
