OAKLAND — Messalonskee High School recently announced its class of 2012 top 10 graduates. Students are in order of academic standing, first through 10th.
Nickolas Ferguson is the son of Louis and Sarah Ferguson, of Sidney. He was a member of the Robotics and Math teams, and was a class representative on Student Council. He was involved in the Boy Scouts of America and was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a member of the National Honor Society and was also named an AP Scholar. He plans to attend the University of Maine, majoring in engineering.
Erin Mercier is the daughter of Greg and Cheryl Mercier. She participates in dance and is a dance teacher for young children. She participated in soccer, track, Key Club, Prom Committee and drama and is a senior mentor. She volunteered in summer school, worked with students with behavior challenges, and donated her time in the elementary classroom. Mercier plans to attend Stonehill College in the fall, majoring in neuroscience.
Benjamin Collins is the son of Ann and Scott Caron, of Oakland, and Scott Collins, of Gardiner. Collins was a member of the freshmen football team and a member of the tennis team. In tennis he was named captain for his sophomore, junior and senior years. He was a member of the local Ultimate Frisbee League, a member of the National Honor Society and was also named an AP Scholar. In the fall, he plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology.
Jane Van Der Karr is the daughter of John Van Der Karr, of Oakland, and Wendy Van Der Karr, of Winslow. She received the Society of Women Engineers award as a junior and was recognized as an AP Scholar. She volunteered for many activities through the school’s Key Club, of which she was elected treasurer for the past two years. She is also an athlete who has accumulated eight varsity letters. She played soccer all four years and was captain her senior year. She is also a two-season track athlete; she earned the captain’s role for the past two seasons on these teams. Van Der Karr plans to attend the University of Buffalo.
Anna Heath is the daughter of Bob Heath and Patty Morini. She participated in varsity soccer for four years, was a class representative for student council, and served on the Prom Committee and the Food Drive Committee. She volunteered at the hospital for two years in the emergency department. Heath plans to attend Lewis and Clark College in fall, majoring in chemistry.
Jake Fenlason is the son of Peter and Ninette Fenlason, of Oakland. He was a member of the football and basketball programs throughout his four years. He was captain of both varsity teams during his senior year. He also spent time as a member of the school’s Key Club. In the fall, Fenlason plans to attend the University of Maryland at College Park to study business management.
Chris Hall is the son of Brian and Jill Hall. He participates on the Portland Phoenix Premier Soccer Team as well as the Maine Phoenix Super-Y player development team. He volunteered his time with youth basketball and youth soccer. He was a peer tutor for special needs students and algebra and geometry students. He referees youth soccer and coached at youth basketball camp. Hall plans to attend Elmira College in the fall, majoring in nursing.
Haley Pelletier is the daughter of Todd and Sherri Pelletier. She was a varsity athlete, senior class vice president and volunteered, not only for the Key Club, but also for the blood drive, and dance and prom committees. She is a mentor for freshmen, young girls in field hockey and basketball and to a girl in a special-needs class. Pelletier plans to attend the University of New England in the fall majoring in pre-med.
Benton Purnell, the son of Nona and Ron Purnell, of Oakland, is attending the University of Maine. He decided to achieve his final diploma requirements through the University of Maine Honors College as an alternative to his senior year at Messalonskee. He is majoring in psychology and has a 3.9 grade-point average. He is canoeing the Mississippi River, from Itasca, Minn., to New Orleans. He is in the St. Louis area, roughly halfway on his 2,500-mile solo journey, roughly two to three months in duration, and is carrying gear to be donated to the New Orleans Boy Scouts upon his arrival. Purnell is also on the board of directors of the McGrath Pond Salmon Lake Association.
Ellie Morisette is the daughter of Mark and Terry Morisette. She is a scholar and athlete who has maintained honor roll with distinction. She is a competitive gymnast and dancer and works part-time at Dairy Queen. She also was on the Yearbook Committee. She participated in the Husson School of Pharmacy Camp last year. Morisette plans to attend Husson University in the fall, majoring in biology and pharmacology.
