AUGUSTA — Police are investigating a report of arson Monday at Gilbert Elementary School.

Augusta police Sgt. Christopher Shaw said paper towels from a dispenser were set on fire inside one of the school’s bathrooms. The fire went out before damaging the paper towel dispenser or the building itself, Shaw said.

Nobody was injured in the incident. The school is for students in grades pre-kindergarten through 6.

Firefighters and police responded to the complaint, which was called in around 11:30 a.m.

Police believe the fire was set by a 9-year-old who reportedly used a lighter he brought from home, Shaw said.

The school did not need to be evacuated, Shaw said.
