Gay Grant won a three-way race in Tuesday’s election, beating opponents Harvey DeVane and Phillip Barter in the Democratic primary for House District 59.

Unofficial results from Gardiner and Randolph showed Grant won with 283 votes, followed by DeVane, 187, and Barter, 161.

Grant will face Republican candidate Daniel Bates, of Gardiner, in the November general election.
State Rep. Stephen P. Hanley, D-Gardiner, held the seat but did not seek re-election because of term limits.

Grant, 52, the owner of writing consulting business, The Write Way, said she would bring fresh ideas and energy to the position.

Barter, 64, an Army veteran and Realtor for 36 years, said he has been involved in many municipal groups in Gardiner, including the Housing Committee, the Waterfront Task Force and the Comprehensive Planning Review Committee. He also serves on the city’s Conservation Committee.

DeVane, 76, served in the Maine House from 1975 to 1977, and has worked as commissioner of the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, and director of the Maine State Energy Office.
