WINTHROP — Complete results were not available late Tuesday in the Democratic primary for House District 82, but Craig Hickman appeared headed for a comfortable victory after soundly defeating Kevin Cookson.

Hickman collected 507 votes to Cookson’s 148 in unofficial results from Winthrop. Readfield, which also is represented by District 82, did not provide results Tuesday evening.

The winner faces Republican Scott Davis in November’s general election.

Patrick Flood, a Republican who represents District 82, is not seeking re-election because of term limits.
Hickman, 44, co-owner and operator of an organic farm and bed and breakfast on Annabessacook Road, was the Democratic nominee for District 82 in 2010 and has been vice chairman of the Winthrop Democrats from 2010 to present.

Cookson, a retired detective for the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office who now owns his own investigation business, served on the Winthrop Town Council for 12 years and spent nine years on the Kennebec County Budget Committee.

Hickman and Cookson hope to attract good paying jobs to Maine. Hickman said the state must do a better job of encouraging local food production and consumption. Cookson said it is vital to begin offering education that will meet the technical requirements of the state’s top employers.
