RANDOLPH — Police continue to investigate a robbery reported Tuesday night at a Water Street grocery store.
The robbery occurred just a couple hours before a hold-up at a pharmacy in Waterville.
Maine State Police Trooper Adam McNaughton said in a prepared statement that the robbery at Goggin’s IGA at 268 Water St. in Randolph happened about 5 p.m. A man handed a store employee a note demanding pills and said he had a gun, McNaughton said.
No weapon was shown and the robber was not given any drugs, McNaughton said.
The Goggin’s store has a pharmacy, but McNaughton wouldn’t say whether the robbery occurred at the pharmacy counter.
Kennebec County Sheriff Corp. G.J. Neagle and his dog, Dracco, were called to track the robber, who was reportedly last seen running up nearby Windsor Street. The robber couldn’t be found.
The robber was described as a white man in his 20s. Emergency dispatch reports at the time of the robbery described him as wearing a white T-shirt, a baseball cap and blue jeans.
The robbery occurred just two hours before a hold-up at the pharmacy inside the Waterville WalMart.
That robber was described as being between 180 and 200 pounds and about six feet tall, with short brown hair and brown eyes, Massey said. He appeared to be 26 to 32 years old and was wearing a light gray knitted polo shirt and a pair of loose-fitting jeans, according to Massey.
A total of 20 pharmacies have been robbed so far this year compared with 24 all of last year, according to Maine Drug Enforcement officials.
Goggin’s pharmacy has been targeted in other robberies. The most recent occurred in February of 2009 when a man walked up to the pharmacy’s drive-though window and demanded prescription OxyContin.
