AUGUSTA — A city man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a police officer responding to a report of a disorderly conduct on Water Street Friday night.
Joseph Gary Lagassie, 58, was charged with assault after reportedly grabbing and hitting Augusta police officer Brad Chase, said Augusta Police Lt. Christopher Massey. Lagassie was being held Saturday at the Kennebec County jail in lieu of $500 cash bail.
Chase was not injured.
Shortly after 10 p.m., Friday, a woman at 375 Water St. reportedly pepper-sprayed a man. Chase found Lagassie in one of the building’s hallways, Massey said. When Chase confronted Lagassie, he grabbed the officer and struck him in the upper body, Massey said.
Chase placed Lagassie under arrest before additional officers arrived.
There were numerous witnesses to Lagassie’s attack, Massey said.
Lagassie, who suffered a cut to his head during the arrest, was taken to be checked at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta and then taken to jail, Massey said.
Lagassie, who was intoxicated, was knocking on doors inside the apartment building, Massey said. Lagassie had reportedly harassed a woman inside one of the apartments before he was pepper-sprayed, Massey said.
