UNITY — Farmingdale’s Johnny Clark overcame engine trouble to win the second annual John Phippen Memorial Late Model race Sunday at Unity Raceway.
Clark won the 59-lap first leg of the race then finished third in the second edging out runner-up Frank Moulton of Burnham, who came in fifth and first, respectively, in the twin 59-lap segments.
“We had problems pretty much since Friday, transmissions and everything,” Clark said. “We won the first one then they inverted the field. We thought we were going to make the car better and we made it worse.”
Clark, who won the $1,500 first place prize, would have lost the race if not for a spin-out by Liberty’s Josh St. Clair with four or five laps remaining in the second leg. St. Clair finished third.
“I kind of thought we were coming home second but it was what it was,” Clark said. “That opened the door for us. That’s how this sport kind of goes.”
Clark is currently second in the points race in the Pro All Star Series North circuit and is the four-time defending points champion. He’ll return to that series in Quebec next weekend.
“It was a memorial race for John Phippen, that’s why we did it,” Clark said.
Clark edged Phippen out at Wiscasset Raceway in 1997 for his first Pro Stock victory. Phippen, whose career spanned 31 years, died of a heart attack after a race at Speedway 95 in 2010.
