AUGUSTA — An Oakland woman has been indicted on one count of theft by deception for allegedly lying to the state to receive more than $10,000 in benefits over seven years.

Loretta Raymond, 56, was indicted by a Kennebec County grand jury last week on a charge alleging she deceived the Maine Department of Health and Human Services between February 2008 and November 2015.

The indictment alleges Raymond “did intentionally create or reinforce the impression that she was separated from her husband, Donald Raymond, and that Donald Raymond did not live with her or contribute to the household income, which impressions are false and which defendant did not believe to be true.”

Raymond was indicted on one count of theft by deception, a Class B crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The indictment alleges Raymond received monetary benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program of more than $10,000 from Feb. 22, 2008, to Nov. 2, 2015.

An indictment is not a determination of guilt but indicates there is enough evidence to proceed with formal charges and a trial.
