Charles McCarthy
AUGUSTA – Charles McCarthy, 86, died Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at the MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center at Glenridge after a short stay. He was born in Augusta on March 22, 1935, a son of the late Joseph S. and Lucienne (Tartre) McCarthy.
Charlie was a graduate of Cony High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.
Mr. McCarthy was the owner/operator of J.S. McCarthy Printing Company for 51 years. The company was honored with several awards over the years, including the Governor’s Award in 1997.
Charlie’s greatest joy was his family. He looked forward every year to taking his kids and grandkids on vacation, especially the Caribbean Cruises. He also travelled extensively with his devoted wife, Lucie. He loved being at his home on Cobbossee Lake boating, puttering on his tractor and directing many family movies.
Charlie liked to play golf at the Augusta Country Club, and entertain family and friends by the lake. He was the keeper of the Cobbossee Lighthouse, “Lady’s Delight”, for years and generously supported many local charities.
After his retirement in 2000, he most enjoyed spending as much time as possible being “Papa” to his 10 beloved grandchildren, and, most recently, his first great-granddaughter.
He was predeceased by his two brothers, Donald and Joseph McCarthy, as well as his sister, Yvonne Farnsworth.
Mr. McCarthy is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lucie Marie (Gingras) McCarthy, of Augusta; his son, Charles D. McCarthy and his wife Penny of Brewer, two daughters, Kathleen A. Tolman and her husband Greg of Scarborough and Mary Keeley and her husband Dan of Kents Hill; 10 grandchildren, their spouses and significant others; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
At his request, there will be no public visiting hours or funeral service. A Celebration of Life will held at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
