Barbara Spencer Nelson

CANAAN – Barbara Spencer Nelson,79, died from pulmonary and renal complications on August 28, 2021 at MaineGeneral in Augusta with her family by her side.

She was born on March 30, 1942 in Skowhegan, daughter to Almon and Lucy Spencer. She graduated from Skowhegan High School and remained in the Central Maine area all her life. She was fondly known for working at the IGA in Pittsfield and would often have customers choose her line over any other, and for her restaurant where people came from all over for the lobster rolls and Gifford’s frappes. She helped run her husband’s paving business, Kennebec Paving, for over 25 years. She loved watching and listening to the loons, feeding the eagles on Sibley Pond, and the hummingbirds on her deck.

Barbara is survived by her two sons Michael and Corey Nelson of Canaan, two daughters Gayle Maroon and her husband Derek of Winslow, and Tara Savage and her husband Carlton of Skowhegan; her eight grandchildren, Kyle (Inna) Liimatainen of Kennebunkport, Kali Liimatainen of Bar Harbor, Destiny and Malcolm Nelson of Wilton, Riley Trafton of Michigan, Cody and Heather Nelson of Canaan, and Camden McCrillis of Skowhegan; great-grandson Spencer; her two sisters Margie Goulette of Skowhegan and Priscilla Ackley of Old Town; and Aunt Shirley Bennett of Skowhegan. She is also survived by many special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband Arthur Nelson, sisters Ruth, Arlie, Marian, and Lois; her brother, Gary Spencer; her parents, in-laws Norma and Milo Nelson; and her special daughter-in-law Susan “Suzi Nelson.

The family would like to thank MaineGeneral doctors and nurses for their incredible care and support. To name a few, Dr. Reight and Dr. LeMoine whom she adored for years, and specifically the nurses Jessica, Alyssa, Kayla, Nick and Cody, and Dr. Lowman who were incredibly kind and caring to her and the family during her stay at MG.

A graveside service is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, 2021 at Fairview Cemetery, Canaan with a dinner/reception to follow at Tara’s house, 331 Waterville Rd, Skowhegan. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Barbara’s life with her family. Special seating and safe accommodations will be available due to COVID and those at risk.
