VASSALBORO — Police have identified a New York man as the person shot early this morning inside a Whitehouse Road home.

Rafael Encarnacion, 22, of the Bronx, N.Y., sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen and was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine State Police said in a news release this afternoon.

Police said the shooting took place inside a home at 38 Whitehouse Road owned by Joe Gagnon, who detectives say fired the shot.

Gagnon, 55, and his daughter, 33-year-old Jaimee Laney, were both arrested, but not in connection with the shooting, police said. Gagnon was charged with violating his bail conditions from a prior arrest and Laney was arrested on a charge of failing to appear in court.

Both Gagnon and Laney live at the house, though Gagnon has also lived in Augusta in recent weeks, police said.

There were also four other people inside the house at the time of the shooting, which was reported about 12:30 a.m. with a 911 call requesting an ambulance.

A team of 15 detectives and sheriff’s deputies have been investigating the shooting and the district attorney’s office will be consulted as the investigation proceeds, police said.
