How can the COVID pandemic grow to its worst level if the vaccines, masking, and other CDC protocols and government mandates are of any true value? The published data states Maine is over 70% of its population having been fully vaccinated and over 20% already received a booster. That there are 500 to 1,000 positive tests per day and hospitals, including critical care units and ventilators, at or near full capacity makes one wonder.

Have the majority of Mainers given up on social distancing, staying home when sick, washing hands often, and most importantly returned to large social gatherings? While my wife and I grieve loss of family gatherings, visits from our adult children and our grandchildren are almost extinct for almost 24 months.

Unvaccinated people get sicker but vaccinated people contract and spread the virus as well, and some die. I believe they have a sense of false safety and neglect the CDC protocols and are mostly responsible for the continued growth of the pandemic. We had not holiday gathering for Thanksgiving nor will we again this year for Christmas. A sad pill to swallow especially with so many others going on with life as usual.

I am my stroke-survivor wife’s primary, and since COVID, mostly sole care provider. There are no home care staff and family stay away afraid to make us sick or cause us to die. I hope everyone might more closely follow CDC guidelines to slow or stop the spread of this virus. It’s not just about getting vaccines and boosters!
