SKOWHEGAN — The Waterville Road was closed for about five hours and traffic rerouted after the driver of a logging truck lost control and slid off the road before the rig toppled onto its side, Skowhegan police said Thursday.
Police officers responded to reports of a crash near the intersection of Waterville Road and Carrier Lane around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from police Chief David Bucknam. When officers arrived they found the fully loaded logging truck on its side down a slight embankment, with logs that had spilled away from the truck.
The driver was identified as Ryan Rathburn, 29, of Anson, who told officers he was driving to the Sappi paper mill in Skowhegan to unload the truck when he took a slight corner and was unable to steer through the ice and slush on the road, Bucknam said.
Rathburn suffered minor head and back injuries and was treated at Redington-Fairview General Hospital. The rig is owned by GCA Logging Inc. and it was towed from the scene by Leonard’s Heavy Rescue, Bucknam said.
