Charles Frederick Stevens

WEST ROCKPORT – Charles Frederick Stevens, 97, died peacefully on Dec. 16, 2021 at Togus Veteran’s Hospital. He was born May 10, 1924, the eldest son of Bertha (Pauley) and Russell Stevens of Noroton Heights in Darien, Conn. After graduating high school, which was an important but difficult personal achievement for Charlie on the heels of the Great Depression, he served proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Charlie met Marion Lee while on leave in CT and the two were married at St. John’s Catholic Church in Stamford on June 18, 1949. They raised their four children on Circle Drive in Greenwich, Conn., while he worked for Pitney Bowes, and later Hartford Gas and Electric, and attended night school to learn carpentry. The Stevens’s moved to Owls Head in 1973, when they purchased the Owls Head General Store and a home across the street by the frog pond. Charlie attended the Owl’s Head Baptist Church while living there and the Lakeview Presbyterian Church in Rockport.Charlie built himself and Marion a home in West Rockport and he took great pride in helping his family build two more homes there; completing the last one when he was 80! He enjoyed working with his hands and being outdoors in the privacy of his property. One might say he reveled in social distancing before it was a part of the national lexicon. During his down time, he enjoyed classic movies, especially those featuring John Wayne, Gunsmoke reruns, Louis L’ Amour books, walking to the post office and family gatherings. Charlie has rejoined Marion, his wife of 71 years, who passed away in May of this year. He was also predeceased by his parents, his brothers George and Bill, his son Charles F. Stevens, Jr and his grandson, Nathan E Stevens. He is survived by his daughter Deborah Parker (Bruce), sons Jim Stevens (Maureen) and Alan Stevens, sisters in law Valerie Stevens and Doreen Stevens, five grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.Charlie was a man that said what was on his mind, but also had a great sense of humor. He was fiercely loyal to and protective of his family. He shared with us many stories about his upbringing, his time in the Navy and many more lessons of a life well lived. Charlie will be interred with military honors, together with Marion, at the Togus Veteran’s Cemetery in the spring of 2022.Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Care, One Church St., Augusta, where memories, condolences and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of our website at http://www.familyfirstfh.com.
