BANGOR – The Gardiner Area High School boys basketball team won its first regional championship, taking a 70-58 win over previously undefeated Mt. Desert Island, Saturday afternoon at the Bangor Auditorium.

Gardiner, now 18-3, will face Yarmouth (17-4) in the Class B state championship game, on Friday night at the Bangor Auditorium.

A 9-0 run in the first quarter gave Gardiner the lead for good. Defensively, the Tigers held Ben Walls, who averaged 15 points per game to lead the Trojans, to two points, a pair of second quarter free throws.

Jake Palmer scored 23 points to lead four Tigers in double figures. Aaron Toman had 16 points and eight rebounds for Gardiner, while Alonzo Connor had 10 points and 10 boards. Justin Lovely had 10 points for the Tigers.

Adam Gray led MDI with 17 points. Jayson Burke had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Trojans (20-1).
