Joyce Atwood Agren Smith
MADISON – Joyce Atwood Agren Smith, 96, of Madison passed away Jan. 7, 2022, at her home. Joyce was born Nov. 12, 1925, in Norridgewock, Maine, the daughter of Clayton L. and Alma F .(Stewart) Atwood.
Joyce was educated in Norridgewock schools, she moved to New Portland at the age of 12 where she attended school and graduated from Central High School.
Joyce always had a smile on her face and made friends easily. In early years she worked as a postal clerk in New Portland, was employed by Chase Hewitt Mill and Dirigo Dowel, Inc. She also enjoyed working in her parent’s store from time to time. In later years she cleaned homes for several people in the area. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and sang in the Choir, she was also a member of the New Portland Fireman’s Auxiliary for many years. Joyce will be remembered for her sense of humor, classy style, easy smile, her love of laughter and a good joke.
Although Joyce was born in Norridgewock and lived in Madison, she always considered New Portland home. Joyce loved to dance; she was proud of the fact that at 94 even with her walker she could still tap dance. She was an avid collector of jewelry, loved to travel, she enjoyed yard sales, visiting with friends and playing cards. Joyce “never met anyone she didn’t like.”
She leaves behind four children Bonnie Atwood & husband Richard of New Portland, Andy Agren & significant other Shelly Flanagin of Florida, Gary Agren & wife Beth of Embden and Lorie Agren & wife Heidi Tolman of New Portland, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, sister in-laws Muriel Handrahan of New Portland and Pirkko Atwood of Kingfield, and many friends that she gathered with over the years at the “Out to Lunch” restaurant in Anson. Joyce was also grateful for the frequent visits from her niece Sheila. She was predeceased by her parents Alma Stewart Atwood and Clayton Atwood, brothers Cecil Atwood of California and Maynard Atwood of Kingfield. She was also predeceased by husband, Conrad Agren of 36 years, husband Robert “Smitty” Smith of 11 years and a special friend Bob Smith.
The family would especially like to thank all the ladies that took loving care of Joyce during her final days as well as the staff of Beacon Hospice, these folks are all invaluable.
At Joyce’s request there will be no funeral service. Interment services will be at the East New Portland Cemetery in the spring.
