Alex Jenson placed third in the dual moguls at the Freestyle Junior Nationals — which was a little better than she had been expecting.

“I was kind of a little shocked at first,” Jenson said. “I wasn’t sure how it would play out throughout the day, because anything can happen in duals.”

Jenson is a junior at Waterville Senior High School, and also attends Carrabasset Valley Academy. Her skiing skills served her well this past weekend in Steamboat Springs, Colo.

The Junior Nationals were held over a six-day period, and Jenson qualified for the finals by placing in the top 20 in the singles competition. Once in the finals, she said she beat six skiers head-to-head before losing to eventual winner Anna Park on Sunday.

“I’ve raced on that course a couple times over the past two years,” Jenson said. “It was a little challenging through the middle section, because the rhythm changed. But overall, it was a very nice course once the sun hit it.”

Jenson is heading to Stratton, Vt. on Tuesday for the U.S. Freestyle Championships, which will take place March 22-25. The NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus) plans to air highlights of the competition on March 31.

“It’s the last event of the season,” Jenson said. “I’m hoping to make finals, which is top 16, then in finals, have a top 10 finish.”

VALMALENCO, Italy — Carrabassett Valley Academy graduate Alex Tuttle of Stratton took second place in a snowboardcross World Cup race Wednesday. This was Tuttle’s first trip to the World Cup podium and a major step in his quest to make the 2014 Olympic team. Tuttle has been mentored by two-time Olympic gold medalist Seth Wescott.
