WINDSOR — Richard Fournier has announced that he is running as a Democrat for House District 58, which includes part of Augusta, Vassalboro and Windsor.

Fournier, 57, of Windsor, said in a news release that he has served 32 years in the Navy Reserve, four years Army active duty, in the Maine National Guard and in the Army Reserve, where he retired as a major. While in the Army Reserve he was mobilized with the 167 Corps Support Group out of Londonderry, N.H., to Iraq from February 2004 to January 2005.

Fournier recently retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Augusta, where he worked as a letter carrier for 25 years.

Also running for the seat are incumbent state Rep. Karen Foster, a Republican from Augusta, and Lori Fowle, a Democrat from Vassalboro, according to candidate filings.

According to Fournier’s release, he has served on the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department since 1981 and was elected by fellow Windsor residents to serve on the town budget committee in 1993 and again in 1999. He also served on the School Union 51 School Committee, saying he “worked to ensure area youth were getting the best education possible.”

Fournier said he is running for the Legislature because he “has seen how working Mainers are struggling in this economy.” He wants to address the skyrocketing costs of health insurance for working families, create good paying manufacturing jobs and protect the environment.

Fournier has been married to his wife, Leanne, for 31 years, and they have three children and three grandchildren.
