Based on staff research, these 22 Maine schools and districts are using at least some form of the proficiency-based education model being promoted by the Maine Department of Education. The schools are at different stages and are approaching it from different angles, such as using standards-based grading systems, or allowing students multiple ways to demonstrate they’ve mastered content.

RSU 4, for instance, has just signed on, while Searsport and Casco Bay high schools have graduated classes with the new model. No Maine school district has yet taken the ultimate step of eliminating age-based grade levels.
