Kathryn Barker Hartley
CORNWALL, Pa. – Kathryn Barker Hartley passed away April 30, 2022, at Cornwall Manor, Cornwall, Pa. She was 101 years old. Kathryn was born in Newtown Square, Pa., to Herbert and Helen Barker. She graduated from Olney Friends School in Barnesville, Ohio, in 1939 and later that year married Walter Hartley with whom she shared 45 years.
She is survived by her children Marie Barnett (Joe) of Cornwall, Pa., Mary Helen Barnett (Jim) of Honey Brook, Pa., and Cynthia Harris of Longmeadow, Mass.; as well as a sister, Dorothy Hall of Cornwall, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents; brother, Bob Barker, sisters Molly Dewees and Biz Stratton, son and daughter-in-law Steve and Kathy Hartley, son-in-law Peter Harris; and grandson, Glenn Hartley.
Kathryn spent her growing up years and early marriage in Chester County, Pa., and moved to Maine in 1955. She was a birthright member of Middletown Monthly Meeting in Lima, Pa., and joined the Methodist Church with her family in 1952. She loved serving the Lord however she could. She was a writer for David C. Cook Publishing Co. for several years writing curriculum for junior high children, often led Bible studies, and was very active in the United Methodist Women’s group.
She loved the outdoors, nature and the coast of Maine. She was a great cook and avid reader. She also enjoyed traveling and anything to do with her children and grandchildren. Kathryn will be lovingly remembered as someone who was a good listener, gentle and loving, with a wonderful laugh! Family gatherings almost always included ice cream and games.
A memorial service will be held at Zerr Chapel at Cornwall Manor on Saturday, May 28, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be from 10 – 11 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Middletown Monthly Meeting in Lima, Pa.
