SIDNEY — A Winslow man was taken to the hospital Tuesday after crashing his car on Interstate 95.

Larry Carbonneau, 43, was taken by Delta Ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with injuries that didn’t appear to be life-threatening, Maine State Police Sgt. Aaron Hayden said.

A LifeFlight of Maine helicopter landed at a truck weigh station just south of the accident scene, but Hayden said responders instead decided to take Carbonneau to the hospital by ambulance after re-evaluating his condition.

Carbonneau was in fair condition Tuesday afternoon at MaineGeneral, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. as Carbonneau was driving his 2011 Chevy Malibu four-door sedan south on Interstate 95.

“He had a medical incident and lost consciousness momentarily and left the roadway,” Hayden said.

The car veered left into the median, where it struck some trees before coming to a stop. Rescuers had to cut some of those trees and remove the roof of Carbonneau’s car to free him from the wreckage.

Traffic backed up roughly a half mile as flow was restricted to one lane for about 90 minutes as rescuers tended to Carbonneau.

The crash was not reconstructed and there are no charges connected to the accident, Hayden said.
