The Farmington Public Library has planned several events to celebrate its first community garden.

A presentation on bees and bee-friendly gardening practices by Roland Lajoie is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, June 2nd, in the Holman Room at the library, 117 Academy St. He will provide a slide show, and there will be a sunflower planting activity for children.

All summer there will be a foragers scavenger hunt that will provide tickets for a photography raffle (photograph by Joseph Burns). Scavenger tickets are at the library and will be added throughout the summer (participants can see how many native Maine plants they can find).

Also planned is a make-your-own-tea workshop (date to be announced) where participants can use herbs grown in the garden to make tea bags for home.

Library staff welcomes daily help checking on the garden and completing certain duties throughout the week depending on weather. The garden will be put in on June 1 and library staff would appreciate help from the community.

Donations are welcome throughout the year; all proceeds from fundraisers go towards garden essentials.
