FAIRFIELD — Police Officer Shanna Blodgett knocked down a porch fire with a fire extinguisher on Horn Hill Road just after noon Wednesday.

Stacy Buzby, 27, said she woke up, saw a garbage truck go by the house that she rents, then heard her dog, Elliot, barking.

When Buzby looked outside the small two-story white home, she saw Blodgett dousing flames on the porch.

Buzby said she and her fiancé, Josh Knowlton, 22, were asleep because she works overnights and he works the late shift at Walmart.

Fairfield Fire Chief Duane M. Bickford said a passerby reported the fire on the dead-end road at 12:09 p.m.

Bickford said firefighters who arrived on scene minutes after Blodgett encountered a smoldering porch.

“So far the cause is undetermined,” he said. “We may not be able to determine the cause.”
