STRATTON — The Dead River Area Historical Society plans to hold the annual Sam O. White Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at 170 Main St.

The event will be hosted by White’s distant cousin, Emerson Dyer.

White was born and raised at Eustis Ridge. After his duty in World War I he moved to Alaska. He was the first bush pilot/Game Warden in the world, according to a news release from the society.

The book, “Sam O. White, Alaskan,” is available at Country Charm in Stratton.

White documented his life by sending pictures, newspaper clippings and other documents back to the people he loved. His family has chosen to share their memorabilia with the public and to house it in the historical society.

The society is usually open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every weekend throughout July and August. This year, with difficulty finding volunteers, it may be open only on special days.

Displays include a collection of old carpentry and logging tools, china, glass, a church organ, furniture from native families, a complete schoolroom, a memorial room to the “lost” towns of Flagstaff and Dead River, the lineage of several native families, and a host of memorabilia from native homesteads.
