CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College scored five goals in the first 30 minutes, 14 seconds of the game to build a lead it would not give up and beat the Maine men’s hockey team 5-1 on Friday night at Conte Forum.

Maine falls to 3-3-1, 3-2-0 in Hockey East.

Boston College improves to 8-1-0, 6-0-0 in the conference.

Boston College took a 1-0 lead on a short-handed goal by Chris Kreider at 11:33 of the first period. The Eagles made it 2-0 less than two minutes later when Kevin Hayes beat Maine goalie Dan Sullivan. It was 3-0 28 seconds into the second period when Kreider scored again.

Maine answered a minute later when Jon Swavely scored from Kyle Beattie. Steven Whitney scored for Boston College to make it 4-1 and Barry Almeida capped the scoring.

Sullivan and replacement Martin Ouellette combined for 25 saves ofr Maine.

College volleyball

Bowdoin 3, Colby 0: Caitlin Burchill had 10 kills in 10 digs in the last game of her career, as the No. 8 Mules lost to No. 1 Bowdoin in the New England Small College Athletic Conference quarterfinals in Brunswick.

Colby ends the season 11-15. Bowdoin is 24-2 and will play in the semifinals today.

Maggie Taylor added six kills and 14 digs for Colby, while Emily Varnie had 16 digs and Kate Pleasants had 18 assists and 10 digs.

Melissa Haskell had 14 kills for Bowdoin.

Maine Maritime 3, UMaine-Farmington 0:
Melissa Lail totaled 14 kills and Chelsa Ward added 10 to lead the second-seeded Mariners to a 25-16, 25-13, 25-14 win over the third-seeded Beavers in the North Atlantic Conference semifinals at Colby-Sawyer College.

Shannon Mitchell led the UMF attack with six kills and seven digs, while Jen Vadnais added five kills and nine digs and Marina Tello (San Antonio, Texas) posted a game-high 11 digs. Whitney Walls doled out nine assists, while Bridget Flaherty turned in seven assists and eight digs for UMF, which was tied 12-12 in the second set before MMA reeled off 13 of the next 14 points to take command of the match.

UMaine-Farmington finished their season at 14-10. Maine Maritime (23-4) advances to face top-seeded Colby-Sawyer in the NAC final at noono today.

College field hockey

Boston University 4, Maine 0: Jacinda McLeod scored a pair of goals as the Terriers beat the Black Bears in the America East semifinals in Durham, N.H.

Maine finishes the season 16-4, while Boston University improves to 11-8 and advances to the conference finals to play No. 10 Northeastern on Sunday.

Also Friday: Courtney Carnes of Winslow had an assist as the Buffalo State women’s hockey team lost to Potsdam 3-2 in Buffalo, N.Y.
